Indonesia is a vast archipelago with an array of opportunities to develop commercial scale cattle-breeding enterprises. The opportunities lay with better utilization of resources available For this reason, IACCB is looking to test breeding models in order to make use of land and available resources.
It is mostly targeting large private sector Partners as they have the resources to not only invest but to remain buoyant through difficult periods.
The three systems being tested are:
- Breeding System A: SISKA – integrated with oil palm plantations – corporates or State Owned Enterprises (SOE)
- Breeding System B: Silvopasture, non-oil palm plantations – corporates / SOE
- Breeding system C: Small holder / farmer groups
None of the breeding systems are new, but they do require testing, analysis, and further development in the Indonesian context. Each breeding system will encompass different partners operating similar beef cattle businesses in varying stages of development.
Some of the projects selected will be with experienced cattle companies and others will be with greenfield sites having 1000’s of hectares of unused land at their disposal. An openness of sharing experiences and results across the systems will be fostered to expedite the learning process.
